Why Orton-Gillingham?

“Children in the bottom 20% are clearly ‘below grade level’ in reading and are unlikely to improve their relative standing without expert, intensive instruction (Moats & Dakin, 2008).” The Institute for Multi-Sensory Education’s proprietary professional development provides direct, systematic and sequential instruction that empowers educators to teach the foundation of the English language. Our revised and expanded research-based Orton-Gillingham training provides exceptional staff development. The Institute’s instructional approach is ideal for: general education, special education, reading teachers, and learning resource room specialists.

In the 1930’s neurologist Dr. Samuel T. Orton and educator, psychologist Anna Gillingham developed the Orton-Gillingham approach to reading instruction for students with Dyslexia. This theory combines multisensory techniques along with the structure of the English language. Those items taught include: phonemes and morphemes, such as prefixes, suffixes, and roots. Common spelling rules are introduced as well. Multi-sensory education incorporates the three learning pathways, which are: auditory, kinesthetic, and visual. This approach is beneficial not only for students with dyslexia, but for all learners. It can be implemented in a large group setting as well as with individuals, small groups and at-risk populations. The methodology allows for implementation of Response to Intervention (RTI) at all levels while allowing for differentiation of instruction.

Often Orton-Gillingham is interpreted as a methodology only meant for reading remediation. Undoubtedly the multisensory component impacts all children. The uniqueness of this type of instruction is that it allows the educator to capitalize on an individual student’s dominant learning modality while delivering instruction that will strengthen the remaining learning pathways.

Training - How It Works

The IMSE approach allows teachers to incorporate into their daily lessons the five components essential to an effective reading program: phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary development, fluency, and comprehension strategies.

What makes IMSE unique is our face-to-face, hands-on technique. Our method works to support your current reading program instead of disrupting it. It is an additional tool to incorporate into your literacy instruction, and since it’s integrated in the general classroom, it’s flexible enough to fit the needs of all types of learners. Teachers can group students based on their need for greater challenges or additional support.

Each district has its own needs and budget, but all districts want to produce proficient readers. Whether you’re a teacher who wants to enhance your classroom reading curriculum or an administrator who wants to empower your teachers to help every child achieve his reading potential, IMSE training unlocks the door to reading fluency.

All trainings can be customized to fit your particular needs and can be presented at your school by an IMSE instructor.

A hands-on, personalized session that provides a complete understanding of IMSE’s enhanced Orton-Gillingham method and the tools necessary to apply it in the classroom. • Reciprocal Teaching for reading comprehension
  • Multi-sensory techniques for sight words
  • Student assessment techniques
  • Guidelines for weekly lesson plans

A thorough, engaging session designed for teachers who teach 3rd grade through high school. Educators will broaden their understanding of the Comprehensive Training using a more sophisticated approach to lesson planning. They will have additional practice with advanced decoding/encoding and higher level spelling rules. Participants will learn the stages of vocabulary with an emphasis on Greek & Latin roots.

You will learn:

  • Encoding & Decoding with Morphemes
  • Higher Level Lesson Planning
  • Greek & Latin Roots
  • Vocabulary
  • Writing & Grammar
Participants can expand this session into a five-day training program by adding IMSE's Comprehension Workshop (6hours) featuring the Reciprocal Teaching method.

An important introduction to the principles of IMSE's enhanced Orton-Gillingham method. After participating in this training, teachers will be able to master the fundamentals of multi-sensory instruction.

You will learn:

  • Phonemic awareness
  • Multi-sensory strategies for reading, writing and spelling
  • Multi-sensory techniques for sight words
  • Syllabication patterns for decoding and encoding
  • Student assessment techniques

An essential session to understand phonemic awareness, the most important reading readiness skill for young children. After participating in this multi-sensory training, teachers will be able to implement phonemic awareness activities and basic practices of beginning reading essentials.

You will learn:

  • Current research regarding phonemic awareness
  • The importance of phonemic awareness
  • Format, goals, and rationale of sequential activities
  • Phonological stage activities to phonemic awareness
  • The basics of IMSE's enhanced approach to Orton-Gillingham
  • Guidelines for lessons, reading readiness and student assessment.

A customized overview that can be up to 6 hours that demonstrates how to incorporate IMSE's multi-sensory reading method into your existing curriculum. After participating in the overview, you will be able to determine which program is appropriate for your staff.

You will learn:

  • Multi-sensory, sequential, cumulative instruction of phonemic encoding / decoding
  • Basic multisensory instruction
  • Multi-sensory techniques for sight words
  • How to implement multi-sensory instruction into your classroom

An enlightening workshop to introduce Reciprocal Teaching, a research-based approach to reading comprehension. Developed by Palincsar and Brown, Reciprocal Teaching is a highly effective instructional activity to increase students' ability to read for meaning and retention. The Comprehension Workshop provides teachers with the resources necessary to take their students to higher levels of reading comprehension in all subjects and genres.

You will learn:

  • Four comprehension strategies: predicting, questioning, clarifying and summarizing
  • A structured, sequential, balanced approach to reading
  • Activities to incease students' ability to read for meaning
  • How to capitalize on students' strengths and strengthen weaknesses
  • Guidelines for lesson plans

A beneficial workshop to reinforce effective reading strategies and techniques. Every teacher knows that learning is an on-going process. In our Refresher and / or Classroom Consultation, an IMSE trainer and teachers come together to review materials, ask questions and share successes. In addition, a trainer may visit your classroom to demonstrate techniques and provide expert feedback as you implement the strategies.

It is a valuable opportunity to:

  • Review your teaching strategy
  • Gain a deeper understanding of the IMSE methodology
  • Reinforce the confidence necessary to ensure success
Teachers find the Refresher Workshop particularly helpful just before a new school year so they can incorporate the knowledge into their materials and plan for student assessments. IMSE customizes the length of this workshop to meet your needs.
